What is a Jalapeno?

Apr 14, 2008 in What

Subsequent to my blog post on Mango Salsa, I received an email from someone in Andaman asking me what is Jalapeno and whether it is sweet fruit that goes well with a fruit salad.

Se, this is what I anticipated. I also got confused about its taste when I read that it is one of the ingredients in Mango salsa. Then I did a bit of Googling around on jalapeno and learnt that it is a chili variety.

Wikipedia too has a lot of information on Jalapeno. It is a cultivar of the species Capsicum.  Jalapeño is also cultivated in smaller scale in Jalisco, Nayarit, Sonora, Sinaloa and Chiapas. The jalapeño is known by different names throughout Mexico.

I also found out a website called Jalapeno Madness, a exclusive website on Jalapeno and Jalapeno lovers. The contents of the website deal with the Jalapeno Recipes,  Jalapeno Resources, Jalapeno FAQs, Jalapeno Products, growing Jalapeno Peppers, preserving Jalapenos and Jalapeno news.

I like the taste of Jalapeno in Pizzas. It is different.

What is a Mango Salsa?

Westerners have a peculiar taste in my opinion. I have no definitely no intention to hurt anyone.

I read in a recipe of Mango Salsa that onion and Jalapeno are added! Onion with Mango fruit? Jalapeno mixed in a mango based fruit salad?

A mango salsa is meant to be sweet. You are allowed to mix other fruits but onion and Jalapeno?

Mango Salsa

Anyhow read here how a Mango Salsa is made. I too make Mango Salsa but with cucumber, onion and Jalapeno.
