When was chess first played as an international game?

Jul 11, 2008 in When

Any idea? Ok, do you remember your first chess game? No? If you don’t remember your own first chess game, how can you or anyone can answer to the question in the title?

That is where  I come in through this blog. I will do a research on your question and provide you the best answer quoting the source.

Here is the answer:

Chess was played in 1851 in London as an international tournament. The tournament was conceived and organized by English player Howard Staunton, and marked the first time that the best chess players in Europe met in a single event. German Adolf Andersson won the 16-player tournament, earning him the title of the Best Player in Europe

When did the Vailala Madness happen?

Apr 19, 2008 in When

I could simply answer 1919 and walk away. But that is not my intention. I want to tell you about the amazing ‘Cargo Cults”- the stories woven around the archipelago of Melanesia.

Melanesia is in the region of Oceania extending from the western side of the West Pacific to the Arafura Sea, north and northeast of Australia.

During 1919, there was a sort of revolt among the natives of Melanesia who were reported to have possessed by the spirits of their ancestors. They were all sick violently with shaking and hysteria. They refused to work and revolted against their religion.

They held big feasts in honor of their ancestors who were expected to arrive on a specific day in a steamer filled treasures such as food, clothes and weapons. The ancestors were said to have developed white skin in the astral world.

This incident became to be known as Cargo Cults.
