What is a shibboleth?

Aug 16, 2008 in What

Let me take it up one at a time. Shibboleth is a practice of identifying the members of a community or a clan and their social and regional origin. The term originated from the Hebrew language which literally means ‘the part of the plant’s.

In modern usage, it is used to solve numerous conflicts between groups speaking different languages of dialects, and is also used to discover hidden members of the opposing group. Today, in English, a shibboleth has a wider meaning, referring to any `in crowd’ word or phrase that can be used to distinguish members of a group from outsiders, even when not used for a hostile purpose.

What does guyliner refer to?

Aug 08, 2008 in What

Yes, I know and you know what is eyeliner but guyliner? Obviously it is for guys I suppose.

I don’t think you need to ask actor Johnny Depp of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Times of India say that Guyliner is a kohl pencil for men. There is nothing on the Wikipedia yet.

Johnny Depp is not the only person who sports a guyliner but Tobey Maguire in Spiderman 3, and Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of the band Green Day also are reported to use guyliner.

I am sorry I am not able to produce an image for guyliner.

What is grey marketing?

Jul 30, 2008 in What

Grey marketing is nothing to do with the neither Grey color nor Grey is the name of a commodity. Ah yes, the word commodity reminds me to tell you that Grey marketing is something to do with the stock market.2254252693_e0e227b17b.jpg

Yes, grey marketing is absolutely legal but it is the trading transaction done through unofficial and unauthorized distribution channels

The grey market of goods is to import and sell products through market channels which are not authorized by the manufacturers. It occurs when the prices of a product differs significantly in different countries.

The grey market of securities markets and IPO (Initial Public Offer) is to buy and sell the shares to be allotted in the future. Cities like Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Rajkot are the most active centers for the IPO (initial public offerings) grey market.

Once the trading is done in the grey market at a stipulated price, the seller must deliver the sold number of shares to the buyer on the day of listing to honor the commitment.

What is Zumba?

Jul 14, 2008 in What

Zumba-doesn’t it sound like an African word and that too a form of African dance?

Well, it looks a dance indeed from the video below but not exactly. It is an aerobic fitness session disguised (wisely so) in the form of dance with music that makes you dance automatically.

Zumba is a cardio-fitness regime based on Latin rhythms developed by a former aerobics instructor Alberto Perez from Colombia. A Zumba class would span several Latin dance styles including Mambo, Salsa, Cumbia and Merengue. Another unique feature of a Zumba class is its party atmosphere unlike a typical aerobics class.

What is a telectroscope?

Jun 28, 2008 in What

Well, a telectroscope though has several meanings, I would call it as the basis for modern day television. That’s why they call it as the first prototype of a television system. The term was also used in the 19th century to describe imaginary systems of distant seeing.

I don’t think many would have heard about this news: An installation of telectroscope with a visual high speed broadband link between London and New York City constructed by Paul St George in May 2008.

By watching this rare video clip, you can see how people in New York and London have interacted through the instrument.

What are applets?

Jun 23, 2008 in What

Of course Applets are not small apples. Applets are neither edible nor solid. But they affect our internet activities positively.

An applet usually performs a very narrow function that has no independent use. Hence, it is an application-let. I mean, an applet can not run independently.  They can be included in an HTML page.  They usually open in a new windoe.

An applet is a little application written in Java. Prior to the World Wide Web, the built-in writing and drawing programs that came with Windows were sometimes called applets. On the Web, using Java language, an applet is a small program that can be sent along with a Web page to a user. Java applets can perform interactive animations, immediate calculations, or other simple tasks without having to send a user request back to the server.-Source: Times of India.

Do you who are all involved in this finest academy?

It includes members such as musicians Beck and David Bowie, Internet inventor Vint Cerf, political columnist Arianna Huffington, Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser, “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, R/GA Founder and Chairman Robert Greenberg, Virgin Atlantic Chairman and Founder Richard Branson, and The Weinstein Company Co-Founder Harvey Weinstein.

What is the difference between agnostic and atheist?

Jun 07, 2008 in What

Both agnostic and atheist are often used terms. These words are invariably used during heated arguments between groups and it is always to defend their faith.

Casual readers might not have found the real difference between these words.

“Agnostic” was introduced by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1869 to describe his philosophy which rejects Gnosticism. Oh, let me not dwell deep into the history.
When you ask someone whether he/she believes in God and the reply is, “I am Agnostic”, then he or she is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God.

And if the reply is, “I am an Atheist”, then he or she is the one who believes that there is no  God.

Have you ever noticed that these two words, agnostic and atheist most apply in books or news papers? They are used only for rhetoric purpose. Yes, when you are the questioner the answer will simply be either no or yes to belief in God.

What is Ajax?

Jun 03, 2008 in What

So, I won over a battle of patience at last and decided to educate myself about ‘Ajax‘.

I have been coming across this term several times in a day and I banked on my dependable wikipedia to learn about ‘Ajax‘.

Ajax, shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is a web development technique for creating interactive web applications.

The intent is to make web pages feel more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user requests a change. This is meant to increase the web page’s interactivity, speed, and usability.

The first use of the term in public was by Jesse James Garrett in February 2005. Garrett thought of the term while in the shower, when he realized the need for a shorthand term to represent the suite of technologies he was proposing to a client.

That is an amusing story.

Now after reading this I immediately recognized its applications; I have seen it so many times
when I book my train tickets on line.

Surely this is an excellent way of presenting data and web forms; it reduces the bandwidth of a website, loads the web site faster too.

But what about the SEO aspect of it? I must find out.

What is an escrow?

May 05, 2008 in What

Indian business community practices a business transaction called ‘Documents against delivery’.

A manufacturer will order spare parts or raw material from another manufacturer. The price would have been negotiated before ordering but the payment would not have been made by the purchaser.

He would have entered into an agreement with the seller that he will pay the invoice amount

to the seller’s bank and the bank can release the freight documents after the payment has been received.

This is called ‘escrow’ now. As per Webster dictionary,  an escrow is a deed, a bond, money, or a piece of property held in trust by a third party to be turned over to the grantee only upon fulfillment of a condition.

Am I clear?
